History of Oakwood Speedway
One of our dedicated volunteers Marny has found another great resource for those interested in the history of Oakwood Speedway - the Canadian Racer website. This site provides lots of interesting information about the speedway when it was in operation in the early 1950’s, as well as some photographs of the drivers and cars in action.
The Oakwood Speedway was a 1/5 mile oval track, both dirt & paved. It was located at the north-east corner of Oakwood & St. Clair West, and was built and operated by Joe Capostisto (Cappy) and Norm Smith. The races ran on Friday nights, and the track operated without a license until it was forced to shut by the City of Toronto toward the end of the 1951 season. Eventually, the land was sold and a grocery store built, with Robina Avenue being extended through the site.
We hope you enjoy learning more about this part of St. Clair’s history!
